Case Study: Professor at Okanagan College

Holding a Complex Manuscript Together

Client: Dr. Catherine Fitzgerald · Professor, Okanagan School of Business

Role: Editorial & Document Support

Scope: Doctoral thesis; substantive editing, manuscript and figure management

Snapshot

Dr. Catherine Fitzgerald was completing a doctoral thesis on workplace health, safety, and well-being—a nine-chapter document with references, appendices, and abbreviation and figure lists. A manuscript of that size and complexity needs more than proofreading. It needs a careful, consistent second set of hands to keep every detail aligned across hundreds of pages.

I worked alongside her in an editorial and document support role, doing the substantive editing and detail management that turned a complex manuscript into a clear, coherent, and consistent finished document.

The Situation

A doctoral thesis is one of the most detail-dense documents a person can produce. Every chapter has to be readable on its own and consistent with all the others. The references have to align. The figures, tables, and abbreviations have to be managed across the whole. And the writing has to be clear, concise, and correct from the first page to the last.

Dr. Fitzgerald needed someone who could hold that level of detail steadily over a long and demanding project—someone who could maintain the text’s clarity without losing her voice, manage the technical pieces, and keep the work moving toward firm academic deadlines without sacrificing quality.

What I Did

I took on the substantive editing of the manuscript—working through the text to make it more readable, concise, and coherent, while correcting errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and style throughout. This required a strong command of written English and the judgment to improve clarity while preserving the author’s intent.

Beyond the writing itself, I managed the technical layers of the document: manuscript structure, tables, illustrations, and the related editing tools needed to keep a nine-chapter work consistent.

I held the details steady so the larger document stayed coherent as it evolved, and I offered recommendations along the way, thinking through problems rather than just marking them.

The Result

A complete, polished nine-chapter doctoral thesis, delivered to the standard and timeline the project required. Dr. Fitzgerald’s own account points to what made the difference: not only the quality of the editing, but the steadiness, initiative, and organization I brought to a long and demanding project.

Dr. Fitzgerald’s Words

"This work required a high level of education in communication and the English language… all of which Elina excels at. Elina has a strong commitment to excellence in all the work she does… Elina gave generously of her time, expertise, and knowledge to help meet the timelines and quality required for this academic research project.

It was Elina’s enthusiasm and perseverance that created a great motivating environment as we progressed through all the document details. I appreciated her ability to offer recommendations and think creatively. What stood out most was her support, initiative, organization and respectfulness."

The Skill Underneath

Editing a doctoral thesis may look far removed from building systems for a service business. But the underlying skill is the one my clients rely on most: holding a large amount of detail steady so that the whole stays clear and consistent.

Keeping nine chapters aligned is detail management at scale. Improving a document's clarity while protecting the author's voice is exactly the care I bring to a client's processes and copy. Offering recommendations and thinking creatively through problems—rather than just flagging them—is how I approach the clarity work I do.

This is the versatility my portfolio is meant to show. My focus is operations, workflows, and clarity systems—and the foundation underneath, precision, follow-through, and the ability to bring order to something complex, adapts to whatever a particular client needs. I pay attention to the individual in front of me and shape my work to fit them.

Nothing breaks if you do nothing.

It just stays in your head. Thirty minutes, free, and no pitch.

If I am not the right person for what you need, I will tell you.
